Dr. Joanne R. Reid earned her bachelor in chemistry. After twenty years in the laboratory and in sales of scientific instrumentation, Dr. Reid co-founded Corporate Development Associates, a computer and engineering consulting firm, specializing in Computer-Aided Drafting and Drawing systems. Dr. Reid obtained her masters of science degree in education and her doctorate in education specializing in educational technology and collegiate administration. She collaborated with Dr. Anderson to develop the first course of study in which critical thinking skills were demonstrated to be taught, to be learned and to be transferred between domains of learning. Dr. Reid is widely published in the field of the teaching, learning and transfer of critical thinking from the classroom to other domains.

Teaching and learning have been studied for more than 2500 years. In the modern era, three major theories have evolved: Behavioral, Cognitive and Constructive. Each of these theories is used at least in part by all educators. The following presentation considers the uses and benefits of each of these approaches, comparing each with Edgar Dale’s Cone of Learning as a metaphor and guide to their optimal use in the classroom.
